Infrared was a type of light.

Some lifeforms possessed a sense of infrared vision, although this was more likely on planets orbiting dim red dwarfs. (Star Trek Adventures module: The Sciences Division) The Horta mostly saw in the infrared spectrum. (TOS novel: Devil's Bargain) Saurians could also see infrared light. (DTI novel: The Collectors) The hestv appeared to possess infrared vision based on recreational equipment selections. (TOS novel: The Wounded Sky)

Technology such as infrared sensors could detect infrared light. (TNG novel: The Forgotten War) Data possessed simple infrared vision in addition to normal sight. (TNG novel: Survivors)
