Ion drive is a type of propulsion technology used in space vessels, which operates by accelerating ions to create thrust. Ion drive was first used by Humans in the late 20th century, and the International Space Agency's Ares IV was powered by a third generation ion drive engine. (VOY episode: "One Small Step")
