Irene Hansen

Irene Hansen in 2378

Irene Hansen was a female Human who lived on Earth during the 24th century. She was the elder sister of Magnus Hansen, the sister-in-law of Erin Hansen and the aunt of Annika Hansen, who was assimilated by the Borg in 2356 and became Seven of Nine.

In 2377, she contacted Starfleet asking them to tell the USS Voyager that she would like to contact her niece, the former Borg drone Seven of Nine. Starfleet informed her and Seven contacted her aunt soon afterwards. The two of them discussed Seven when she was a little girl. Irene told her that she was "the most stubborn six-year-old [she'd] ever met" and that it was wonderful to see her again. (VOY episode: "Author, Author") As Magnus and Erin had embarked on their independent research mission to study the Borg on Stardate 32611 in 2353, this was the first time that Irene had seen her niece in almost 25 years. (VOY episode: "Dark Frontier")

After the USS Voyager returned to the Alpha Quadrant in 2378, Seven of Nine went to live with Irene. (VOY novel: Homecoming)

By 2381, Irene had the incurable progressive neurological disease Irumodic Syndrome and was slowly dying. Seven noted that she was the only thing to bring her comfort and watching her condition degrade was like observing a slow motion assimilation. (ST - Destiny novel: Mere Mortals) The Doctor, amongst other projects, was trying to find a cure for her but his efforts were unsuccessful. Irene eventually died from her illness. (VOY novel: Unworthy)
