"It's Only a Paper Moon" is an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It aired in December 1998 as part of the seventh season of the series. Nog returns to the Deep Space 9 after treatment for his war injury and seeks solace in the world of Vic Fontaine's casino.
Summary[]
Nog returns to the station after losing his leg on AR-558. Although greeted by family, friends and fellow crew, he declines an offer to attend a party for him.
Nog is walking with a cane and brings up the subject in a counseling session with Ezri. Although his artificial leg works, he finds it painful to walk with, hence the cane. More therapy seems to be the last thing that Nog needs.
Recalling hearing songs performed by Vic Fontaine played by Bashir on AR-558, Nog visits Vic's holosuite program and decides to take his medical leave within the program.
Jake brings a Bajoran girl called Kesha to the holosuite, but Nog isn't keen to have her there and he and Jake end up fighting. Ezri comes to Vic and comments they it is time for Nog to leave the holosuite, but Vic is enjoying having him there. Nog and Vic plan to expand the casino and Nog gradually stops using his cane. Vic comes to see that Ezri is right, so deactivates his own program. Nog confesses they he is scared of dying, but Vic points out that he will die a little by little staying in the holosuite. Nog realises that Vic is right and returns to duty. As a thank you to Vic, Nog arranges for Vic's program to start running constantly, as Vic was experiencing real life for the first time, like sleeping in a bed and socialising with friends.
