The Iyaarans were a humanoid race native to the planet Iyar in either the Alpha or Beta Quadrant. (TNG episode: "Liaisons")
Their government was known as the Iyaaran Scientocracy. (ST video game: Infinite)
Physiology[]
The Iyaarans were humanoids with distinct forehead ridges. What separated them from other humanoid races was that they did not have children. Instead, they reproduced by post-cellular compounding, emerging from natal pods fully grown. When Iyaarans were injured, their metabolic rates slowed down in order to promote healing, making it look like they were dead. (TNG episode: "Liaisons")
Culture[]
The Iyaarans as a species had no natural understanding or social forum for concepts such as love, pleasure, or antagonism. Eating food was for sustenance only, and their diet of bio-enzymatic supplement was extremely bland. They also utilized a shape-changing technology, worn as a necklace, that allowed them to assume the appearance of other humanoids and other genders for their own purposes. (TNG episode: "Liaisons")
History[]
In 2370, the Iyaarans conducted their first cultural exchange with the United Federation of Planets. Three Iyaaran ambassadors were sent to the USS Enterprise-D to study the concepts of love, pleasure, and antagonism. While there was success in learning about pleasure and antagonism, learning about the nature of love was a failure. (TNG episode: "Liaisons")
Mirror Universe[]
In the mirror universe, by the 2340s, the Iyaarans had become worried about the actions of the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance and wished to see the Alliance destabilized. To this end, the Iyaarans sent Sestro to impersonate Jean-Luc Picard and infiltrate the Alliance. (STA - Mirror Universe- Shards and Shadows short story: "The Traitor")
