Jaan Holona was a 23rd century Human man from the planet Wall who served as a clerical assistant aboard the civilian cargo ship Alisa under the command of Captain Linn Yland.

Biography[]

Holona's mother died from the Green Plague on Wall shortly after he was born, so he was raised by his father and friends at the Wallport spaceport. His father made sure he had an education, focusing particularly on mathematics. After his father died in a warehouse fire, Jaan resolved to finally get to space, for himself and to honor his father, eventually joining the crew of the small freighter Alisa In the 2280s decade. He was extremely proud to be aboard, despite his limited role as a clerical assistant.

Yland and cargomaster Fev Kinnda negotiated a deal to transfer a shipment of titanite ore from Wall to the Oregon Trail at Freeloader within a narrow margin of time. However, ore loading was tremendously slowed because the spaceport's automatic loaders couldn't fit through the cargo bay doors. Holona tracked down an older series of smaller loaders that could do the job and arranged to borrow some of them for free.

Appreciating their young crewmember's desire to be useful, assistant cargomaster Olvar Tarrelsen and communications officer Lockridge finagled a reason for Holona to be on the bridge during liftoff, and Yland assigned him to learn navigational skills with chief pilot Hhervv. During their 42-day voyage, Kinnda helped Holona with clerical accounting, to understand the various expenses and income for the trip. When they arrived three days ahead of Oregon Trail and were met by a pair of Orion inspectors, Yland asked Holona to provide them with refreshments while she paid off their boss Ovrull.

Holona then had to prepare paperwork, rig the cargo for transfer, pay berthing fees, and procure another shipping assignment. He earned a small percent of the profits from the ship's delivery, then Lockridge gave him a guided tour of Freeloader during their shore leave.

Holona's first trip to Freeloader was dramatized in a 2289 article in Spacelandes magazine, written by Captain Anson Robertson from Holona's point of view. (FASA RPG module: Spacelanes: The Magazine of Interstellar Trade)
