James Kurland was a male human Starfleet officer in the 25th century. (STO episodes: "Cardassian Struggle", "The 2800")
Biography
By the late 2400s, he had achieved the rank of captain. As of the year 2409, he was the commanding officer of space station Deep Space 9 and the USS Defiant. He also had operational authority over Starfleet forces in the Beta Ursae, Alpha Trianguli, and Zeta Andromedae sector blocks. (STO mission: "Venture into Deep Space")
- Until late 2015 Kurland was the mission giver for Federation player characters in most of the missions in the "Cardassian Struggle" story arc. Klingon Defense Force characters instead reported to Ambassador S'taass. The Season 11: New Dawn update featured a revamp of the arc, removing Kurland's direct involvement and replacing him with Commander Sarish Minna.
Kurland took the Defiant to Minos Korva to help another Starfleet vessel defeat a Klingon attack on the tribble sanctuary set up there by the Federation, and helped disable the IKS Kang. (STO - Cardassian Struggle mission: "The Tribble with Klingons")
Later that year Kurland was among the delegates at a conference attempting to set up an anti-Borg alliance, held aboard Deep Space 9. When the conference was interrupted by the appearance of Dominion vessels through the Bajoran wormhole, he grabbed a phaser rifle and helped the group fight its way to the escape craft. (STO - The 2800 mission: "Second Wave")
At the temporary command post in the city of Hathon, Kurland contacted the Vorta Loriss in overall command of the fleet, and attempted to convince her that she and her forces had been shifted 34 years into the future and that the Dominion War was long since over. (STO mission: "Of Bajor") He commanded the Defiant during the assault to retake Deep Space 9, and approved the suggestion by an allied captain to spacewalk onto the station hull to take out First Kar'ukan. (STO - The 2800 mission: "Boldly They Rode")
In 2410, Kurland again commanded the Defiant in the final battle for Earth at the end of the Iconian War. (STO - The Iconian War mission: "Midnight")
