Janíce Kerasus was a 23rd and 24th century Human woman. She was an officer in Starfleet who served aboard the Federation starships USS Enterprise and USS Excelsior under the command of James T. Kirk.

Biography[]

Kerasus was born in 2210. (SCE eBook: War Stories, Book 1)

Kerasus had curly, dark brown hair and slanting brown eyes. She was big-boned and tall. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: My Enemy, My Ally)

Her hobbies included equestrian events, creative writing, and cats. Her blood type was A+. (TOS video game: The Kobayashi Alternative)

She was an expert in Romulan culture, and was adept at translating the Romulan language with all its subtleties and nuances. She could speak Klingonese rapidly and fluently. She was also able to speak more obscure languages, such as Vercingetorig, Shaulast, and Ddaisekedeh. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: My Enemy, My Ally, TOS novels: Doctor's Orders, The Wounded Sky)

She translated a quote by the Romulan V. Raiuhes Ahaefvthe for book xviii of Taer'thaiemenh. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: My Enemy, My Ally)

In 2275, Lieutenant Kerasus served as chief linguist aboard the USS Enterprise, and was the primary person responsible for updating the universal translator, as well as translating any alien written documents that were brought aboard. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: My Enemy, My Ally)

In 2285, she served with Kirk again, when he was put in temporary command of the USS Excelsior. (TOS - Double Blind comics: "Part One", "Part II")

At 165 years old, she continued to be active into 2375, working at Starbase 92 to decrypt Dominion codes during the Dominion War. She joined Bart Faulwell, Roxana Novac, Terence Throckmorton, T'Lura, and Ganris Phrebington in decrypting a new code with no known linguistic or mathematical base to work from. Faulwell thought it could actually be an obscure Dominion language, similar to how Navajo was used by American forces in World War II. While Kerasus spent a week in the infirmary with lung difficulties, a complete linguistic database of known Gamma Quadrant species was purchased from DaiMon Bikk. Kerasus located the appropriate language — from an aboriginal tribe on the Karemma homeworld — which the universal translator had not yet deciphered, but which matched the Dominion code perfectly. (SCE eBook: War Stories, Book 1)
