Jana Akton was a humanoid Starfleet ensign serving in the late 23rd century.

Early life[]

She grew up in the rough environment of the mining colony on Rigel XII in the Levintine Expanse. Akton never depended on luck. She worked hard in the mines to be able to leave and join the Starfleet. She believed however that Starfleet was not perfect, neither the regulations she would have to follow; she knew that James T. Kirk broke them many times in order to save the Federation. (SA novel: Starfleet Academy)

She took part in a staged terrorist assault during the Starfleet Academy Command School opening ceremony. Coordinating her movements with Vanda M'Giia, they rushed in the auditorium from the wings and opened fire with a projectile weapon against Commandant Aex Rotherot. Captain Hikaru Sulu jumped in front of him and was driven down by the shots. As they rushed the platform, one of them aimed at Rotherot, but Sulu recovered and pushed her down. Commander Pavel Chekov, instructor at the school, dodged their fire and chased them out with his hand phaser. (SA novel: Starfleet Academy)

She was assigned to the starship bridge simulation cadet group of "captain" David Forester, making use of her subwarp piloting skills as a helm officer. Forrester was supposed to complement her lack of technical expertise. (SA novel: Starfleet Academy; TOS video game: Starfleet Academy)

Soon after their first mission, she clashed with Geoffrey Corin, who claimed semi-jokingly that his rich parents bought him an entrance to the Academy, whereas she sweated for it; during the argument she dropped a mechanism she was holding and rammed Corin, crashing to the Captain's Chair. Forrester had to keep them both in line. (SA novel: Starfleet Academy)

One night Akton visited Forrester in his quarters and complained about Corin. She claimed that he was the weakest link and pulled the quality of the whole team down. She also revealed that Corin began dating Faith Gage, a girl Robin Brady was interested in her, affecting also him negatively. Forrester promised to have a talk with Corin. He also learned from Jana they were due to the Old Soldiers Mission earlier than scheduled. (SA novel: Starfleet Academy)

Background[]

In the video game she appears as a dark haired humanoid (perhaps intended to be a Trill, judging by the rows of spots on each side of her face). In the novelization of the game, she was referred to as being human with brassy blond hair.

Although she didn't appear in the console version of Starfleet Academy she does have a similar personality to Kevin Elliot, a character who was unique to the console games.
