Janet Hester was a 22nd century Human woman. She was a well-known inventor of transporter technology.
Biography[]
Janet Hester directed the Hester Project, which created a working prototype transporter at the Deneva Research Station on Deneva. (TOS reference: Spaceflight Chronology, TOS comic: "Experiment in Vengeance!")
On reference stardate 1/35, Hester petitioned the Deneva Science Review Board to expand the scope of her project beyond their successful molecular re-integration of a protozoan. (TOS reference: Spaceflight Chronology)
The Federation Council denied her request and shut down the project. Instead of reporting to Starbase 14 for reassignment, the 36-year-old Hester and her teammates took their transport to the planetoid Mycena, where they established the Mycena outpost and continued working for the next half-century in an attempt to re-materialize Human test subjects.
The 89-year-old Hester was picked up alone by the USS Endeavor. However, non-corporeal test subjects had managed to retain some consciousness, blamed her for the project's failures, and murdered the crew of the Endeavor in search of her. She fled aboard the shuttle Kepler, but crashed and died on Mycena.
In 2273, a landing party from the USS Enterprise located Hester's body in the wreckage and showed it to the non-corporeal entities. James T. Kirk and Hikaru Sulu destroyed the wreckage with overloaded phasers. (TOS comic: "Experiment in Vengeance!")
- "Experiment in Vengeance!" used SFC dates that equated to Hester traveling to Mycena in 2198 and dying in 2251. Those dates were canonically invalidated by ENT episode: "Daedalus", which established that a human-viable transporter was invented by Emory Erickson in 2139, 60 years prior to Hester's research.
