"This universe is dying, creature, and soon we must depart or else perish with it. Your realm is the closest dimension, and therefore the one that takes the least energy to reach. So it is there we must go."
Commander Woryan, 2268[src]

The Jatohr universe is the origin of the Jatohr species. The Jatohr were the only known sentient species that originated there. (TOS - Legacies novel: Captain to Captain)

History and specifics[]

This universe was the first home of the Jatohr. A catastrophe of unknown proportions threatened the Jatohr, so Commander Woryan tasked their scientists to find a solution. First Scientist Eljor invented a device, the Transfer Key, that was able send Jatohr individuals to other universes. They built a transfer-field generator to scale up this technology and focus the energy required to transfer their entire species to another universe.

In 2240, the Jatohr used the Transfer Key to transfer their entire species to the primary universe. They immediately appeared on the planet Usilde. The Jatohr used their transfer field technology offensively, and sent native Usildar individuals to the Jatohr universe, when they didn't comply with Commander Woryan's demands.

In 2249, nine USS Enterprise personnel were sent to the Jatohr universe by Commander Woryan. The Enterprise away team leader, Number One, was captured by the Jatohr, but befriended First Scientist Eljor. Together, they used the Transfer Key to send all remaining Jatohr back to the Jatohr universe. (TOS - Legacies novel: Captain to Captain)

In 2267 and 2268, several Federation personnel and one Klingon, Councillor Gorkon, were transferred to the Jatohr universe in various circumstances. Ambassador Sarek was one of them, and he used his enhanced mental ablities to leave the Thoughtspace located in the Jatohr universe. Ultimately, he used a modified sensor probe sent by Enterprise to transfer all the misplaced Federation, Klingon, and Usildar back to the planet Usilde. An indeterminate number of Jatohr were also sent back. (TOS - Legacies novel: Best Defense;TOS - Legacies novel: Purgatory's Key)

Physical properties[]

"We must push past the boundaries of this perceived reality, Captain. It is our only hope to leave this place. So long as we remain trapped within this fiction, we are lost, and no one may ever find us."
Sarek, 2268[src]

The passage of time in the Jatohr universe was distorted for species entering it from the primary universe. Biological responses, such as hunger, perspiration, and fatigue, were not evident there. It was difficult for humans to maintain a focused mind. Humans in this place did not appear to grow older than they were at the time they left the primary universe.

When first entering the Jatohr universe, sentient beings arrived in the 'Thoughtspace.' This area was a shared mental construct that manifested as a physical location. It was a mental buffer protecting the minds of those entering the Jatohr universe. The Thoughtspace appeared to be a planet with twin suns overhead, and people sent to this universe always arrived at the same desert-like location. The Jatohr built a large city in the Thoughtspace.

Enhanced mental discipline and psionic abilities allowed for more control over the Thoughtspace. People with this level of control were able to manipulate matter in the Thoughtspace, creating and destroying objects using only their minds. Sentient beings killed in the Thoughtspace only ceased to exist there; their consciousness continued to live in the true reality of the Jatohr universe.

The true reality of the Jatohr universe was perceived as a large, gray void, filled with the consciousness of the sentient beings there. Humans had no perception of depth or height, but the minds of others appeared as multi-colored filaments of energy all around them. It was possible to communicate with other minds, despite the lack of physical presence. (TOS - Legacies novel: Best Defense;TOS - Legacies novel: Purgatory's Key)
