The Jefferies class[2] was a 23rd century Federation starship type, a heavy cruiser[1] and later legendary miracle worker light cruiser[2] class in Starfleet service in the 2270s[1][5] and 2410s[4] decades. The Jefferies class was a variant subclass of the Constitution-class cruiser. Among Constitution-class variants, it stood out by having the ship's registry number painted in large letters on either side of the secondary hull. (STO - J'Ula's Discovery mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock", TOS - Waypoint comic: "The Fear")

History and specifications[]

Constitution-class refit proposal, 2271.

The USS Jefferies (NCC-1750) was active by stardate 2821.5 in the year 2267. It harbored a teardrop-shaped variant of the Class F shuttlecraft. (ST calendar: Ships of the Line 2017)

By the year 2270, Starfleet was drawing plans for refit configurations of the Constitution-class heavy cruiser. A future Constitution-class ship encountered by the USS Enterprise around stardate 6251.1 was the 25th century Nautilus. While the Enterprise crew at first assumed the Nautilus matched the configuration of their own ship, Commander Spock noticed futuristic features, like shortened warp nacelles. (TOS novel: Crossroad)

The .

The Enterprise.

After the Constitution-class heavy cruiser USS Enterprise returned from its historic five-year mission in 2270, one idea of an extensive refit included the Phase II concept, with a projected launch in 2271. The design was notable for the prominent registry number painted on either side of the secondary hull, and the use of square warp nacelles on an Enterprise. (The Official Starships Collection Issue Bonus 8: "USS Enterprise Phase II")

The in .

The Intrepid in 2275.

The Enterprise was instead refitted to Enterprise-class configuration, and launched after 2.5 years of work in 2273. (TOS movie & novelization: The Motion Picture)

In 2275, the Constitution-class heavy cruiser USS Intrepid (NCC-1631) had been refitted into the configuration with shorter warp nacelles. (TOS - Rihannsu: The Bloodwing Voyages novel: My Enemy, My Ally)

In 2285, the Mark IV bridge simulator at Starfleet Academy replicated the bridge of the Enterprise-class USS Enterprise. Console readouts showed the Jefferies-class configuration instead. (TOS movie: The Wrath of Khan)

The in .

The Enterprise in 2411.

Late in 2410, Starfleet revisited several "iconic" starship classes with upgrades to match them with the newest starship designs. These were called legendary starships. (STO website: Legacy: 10th Anniversary Legendary Starship Bundles)

Following the Battle of Excalbia in early 2411, which saw the prominent involvement of hero ships from the Federation's past and present, the newly-minted Jefferies-class was added to the lineup of tier 1, tier 2 and tier 6 cruisers. (STO - Legacy missions: "Measure of Morality (Part 2)", "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Alternate timelines[]

The Enterprise in 2273.

In the Phase II continuity, the Jefferies-class Enterprise was relaunched in 2271 and visited Earth. (The Official Starships Collection Issue Bonus 8: "USS Enterprise Phase II")

Zhang Sui leaves Enterprise shuttlebay.

Zhang Sui leaves Enterprise shuttlebay.

This Enterprise was equipped with small, aerodynamic shuttlecraft, including Phase II shuttle Zhang Sui. (The Official Starships Collection Issue Bonus 19: "Phase II Concept")

The USS Enterprise commenced a second five-year mission under Captain James T. Kirk in 2273. Soon after, a Romulan scout ship crashed into the saucer section. The situation was defused by Captain Kirk and science officer Xon, though the Romulan crew committed suicide. (TOS - Waypoint comic: "The Fear")

Livery[]

In the 25th century, the hull design of the Jefferies-class miracle worker light cruiser allowed its commanding officer to choose from different livery materials. These could be modified at Starfleet Shipyard Operations and Khitomer Alliance shipyard interfaces. The material options included upgrade, veteran, and numbered types.

The standard outfit included a recessed deflector dish, similar to the Enterprise-class. The Beta configuration featured the extended dish of the 2260s-era Constitution-class. (STO - J'Ula's Discovery mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. (STO missions: "Coliseum", "Cold Storage", "Boldly They Rode")
