Jo Williams was a 23rd century Human woman, a Federation news reporter.
History and specifics[]
In the 2270s, Williams was recognized by some as "the most famous broadcast journalist in the quadrant".
In 2274, Admiral Heihachiro Nogura granted Williams approval to produce a documentary about Starfleet in the wake of recent budget cuts, and signed an official letter authorizing her work. She believed that Nogura hoped public support would be improved by having this special program shown on her network.
Williams was allowed full access to interview James T. Kirk and Spock while visiting the starship USS Enterprise, and was permitted a wide latitude to observe them in action. She traveled via transport and boarded the Enterprise near Starbase 22 prior to its mission on Argus IV. During the mission, she accompanied a landing party to the surface, met Max Vargas and Harry Mudd, endured earthquakes, and witnessed the birth of the Argus IV creature.
Kirk confessed during his interview that he disliked his public persona, which elevated him to the stature of a comic strip hero, and hoped Williams's documentary would show Starfleet officers more realistically, as people just doing their jobs. (TOS comic: "It's a Living")
- Williams' network was not named in the story, but given her prominence it would have been a Federation-wide network such as FNN, FNS, Newsnet or UFPI.
