Following the removal of Diego Reyes from the post of station commander, Cooper was temporarily placed in his role. Cooper resumed his former position with the arrival of Rear Admiral Heihachiro Nogura, Reyes's permanent replacement. (VAN novel: Precipice)
Cooper was one of the few essential personnel who remained on Vanguard during the Tholian attack in late 2268. He was killed after Tholian weapons fire struck a direct hit to the station's operations center, crippling it. (VAN novel: Storming Heaven)
