A judge is a person who presides over court proceedings. A judge is usually a lawyer. In Starfleet and other military institutions, a judge is part of the Judge Advocate General's office.
Such individuals hear the testimony of witnesses and evaluates evidence presented by parties and then issues a judgment based on the applicable law and his or her own personal judgment. In criminal matters, a judge may decide the guilt or innocence of a person and issue sentences to those found guilty. (TOS movie: The Undiscovered Country; DSC novel: Drastic Measures)
Taking on the role of a 18th century judge, Trelane sentenced Captain James T. Kirk to death. (TOS episode: "The Squire of Gothos"). Trelane's fellow Q appeared as a Post-Atomic Horror Judge among other figures during the first encounter between Q and the crew of the USS Enterprise Q. (TNG episode: "Encounter at Farpoint")
