Judo was a form of martial art which was originally developed in Japan on Earth by Kano Jigoro. The defense combatant uses the blows and momentum of the attacker against them; thereby weakening the threat, with as little brute force and energy possible. (TNG novel: The Romulan Prize)

Judo remained a popular form of martial art well into the 23rd century, with a dojo training hall being integrated into the gym facilities installed aboard the Constitution-class USS Enterprise during the 2260s decade. Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu was a frequent visitor to the dojo during his service aboard the Enterprise. (TOS novel: The Entropy Effect)

As a young man, Ryan Leslie became proficient in many martial arts including judo. At Starfleet Academy, Leslie participated in several judo matches against his future captain, James T. Kirk. Kirk would later recall that Leslie would always beat him. (TOS - Who's Who in Star Trek comic: "Issue 1")

Captain Kirk would go on to practice judo and would go on to demonstrate his knowledge in hand-to-hand combat against a number of foes, using a judo cut (or chop) to disable them. (TOS episode: "Patterns of Force"). In the year 2266, Kirk would show young Charles Evans some basic judo techniques in the hopes of befriending him. (TOS episode: "Charlie X"). In 2267, Kirk mistakenly[1] divided Judo into two types: kenpō and allied karate. (TOS novel: Mission to Horatius)

Background information[]

  1. Kirk's error is completely understandable. After World War II, United States military training referred to all forms of unarmed, Eastern inspired combat as "Judo". In 1968 anyone who didn't know what they were talking (or writing) about could easily make this mistake.
