K'Tar was a Klingon woman of the planet Taganika.

Biography[]

Early life[]

In her youth, she was courted by both Gowron and Torghn, who had recently lost his father. Although Gowron outranked Torghn, he chose to continue his space battles, and let his friend return to rule his house. They married and together they had a son, Pok. K'Tar made sure Pok grew up with honorful values and taught him the story of Kolan and Dula.

A fateful lop'no[]

K'Tar met Gowron again during the lopno' for Pok's Rite of Ascension. She looked at him annoyed when Pok tripped and dropped the presents brought to him by Gowron. Right that time, the family's enemy, Vok, entered, and insulted Pok for his clumsiness. K'Tar defended her son, having faith in his skills against beasts and enemies. Vok made a threatening move against her, but swiftly K'Tar twisted his arm and held her knife to his throat; mimicking his own words against her son, she doubted how he was capable of running his own House. Vok continued laughing, considering K'Tar's aggressivenes as part of a mating ritual. She released him, and always looking into his face, called him a veQ and ordered her son to throw the unwanted guest out. However Vok reminded them that even old enemies were welcome to a lopno'. K'Tar warned Vok not to spoil it with politics, and as Pok served Gowron, she saw to the presents.

Widowhood[]

She brought them to the dining table, where Pok received his gifts. Seeing that he failed to recognise the score of qul tuq, a gift by one of the guests, she commented that the young are ignorant of their own family's history. Soon after she witnessed her husband being killed by a Romulan assassin probe, hidden in Gowron's box. She touched her dead husband's hand asking Gowron if the seal had been broken on his package, which he examined and said it was intact before Pok opened it.

Gowron, Pok and the other warriors took a blood oath of vengenace against those responsible; but for Pok to follow them he had to complete his Rite of Ascension. Indeed that night, while Tellot, Gowron's science officer, analysed the probe, Pok passed through the River of Pain and successfully reached the hearth of the ritual chamber. K'Tar ran inside to help him back to his feet, saying that their House lost a warrior but gained another that same day; she bowed her head slightly, acknowledging her son as the new head of their House.

Right then a servant announced that Tellot finished studying the probe, and they went to the dining room. The science officer reported that she found the probe's point of origin, within the Romulan space; K'Tar wondered whether any Romulan from that system would be able to come by that rare probe; Tellot however said the materials were too expensive for any common being. Gowron claimed he knew where the dishonorable wretches do their dealings around the Galaxy, with K'Tar seemingly accusing him for bringing their works in her house. Staring at her, Gowron asked whether she blamed him for Torghn's death, which K'Tar denied; but threatened with a mother's blood oath if anything happened to Pok while being with him. Gowron asked Pok if he'd join them with his free will, and K'Tar was sure, knowing that her son would not follow the bad example of Kolan.

Pok's return[]

It was during a night when Pok returned from his first adventure and K'Tar greeted him as if he returned from war. She hugged him and nodded thanks to Gowron, and they were joined by Qua'lon. During dinner Gowron narrated to them their adventure, how they killed treacherous T'lak, and then Meska and Aleria, who said that an ancient house was behind the murder; and how Pok saved them from a detonator. K'Tar shone with joy, conveying Torghn's pride to their son. But Gowron disagreed with Qua'lon that the circle of vengeance was closed; puzzled and worried, K'Tar pointed out that Qua'lon had killed Vok, who belonged to an ancient house, and agreed with Qua'lon that it was finished.

They were interrupted by T'Var, Vok's window, who insisted to speak with Gowron. She accoused the SepIch for taking their treasures, which K'Tar thought it was just after her husband's death, but T'Var insisted he was innocent and wrongfully killed. Pok, as head of the House, let her speak, and she admitted that her husband wanted Gowron dead, but not Torghn. She said that if her husband made an attempt to kill Gowron, he'd new that Torghn's honor would save him at all costs. Then K'Tar understood: whoever wanted Torghn dead, would feign an attempt against Gowron, knowing well that Torghn would rather sacrifice himself rather than the dishonor of letting a guest of his House being killed.

Prompted by Gowron, Pok pointed at Qua'lon as the person who'd want his father dead. K'Tar was worried when Qua'lon challenged him to vItHay' to prove his innocence, which Pok accepted. (TNG novelization: Klingon)
