Captain Kadan was a male Phaetonian Starfleet officer from the planet Phaeton in the 23rd century. He was married for a brief time to Janice Rand in the year 2274.
Background[]
Kadan’s consciousness was contained within a small glass pyramid about 18" tall. A voder, which translated his thoughts into speech, was attached to one side of the pyramid. The pyramid was connected to a circular platform, from which extended three legs at equidistant points. The platform was able to hover and maneuver.
History[]
During a shore leave two months prior to stardate 8180.7, Rand met Kadan on Starbase 12, fell in love with him, and they were married. When Kadan was assigned to the USS Icarus for a millennium-long mission outside the galaxy, Rand volunteered to accompany him, acting as a human liaison to the crew of 100 Phaetonians who would operate a ship built for humans.
Kadan was wired into the navigational console on Icarus’ bridge. The Phaetonians assumed their strong mental disciplines would protect them against effects of the galactic barrier, but instead it drove them all insane. Rand temporarily became telepathic and could see the insane Kadan as he was seeing himself, in a corporeal form of his ancestors. Kadan piloted Icarus at warp 12 toward his homeworld. It took a combined mind-meld with Spock and Rand to stop Kadan from crashing the ship on Phaeton.
Kadan and the other Phaetonians were taken to Deep Space Station K-12, and later they would be transported from the station to the asylum at Elba II for treatment. Realizing that Kadan might never recover, that his mind would certainly never be the same, Rand sought an annulment. (TOS comic: "Eclipse of Reason")
