Karabos II was a planet, the second planet of the Karabos system, located in Aulacri space abutting the Federation. It was the original homeworld of the extinct Karabosi and advanced Aulacri.
History and specifics[]
Fragmentary evidence suggested that Karabosi and Aulacri evolved on different continents and developed separate civilizations, but once they met they warred. The Aulacri eventually migrated to Aulac about four thousand years ago, around the time that the Karabosi bombed Karabos II with antimatter weapons that rendered the biosphere lifeless. By the 23rd century, it was an uninhabitable, dead world, considered too arid and dry to support life. The terrain was an uneven, rocky desert with some mountain ranges. Its atmosphere was low in oxygen.
In the 2240s decade, Aulacri hoped to reclaim Karabos II through terraforming by bombarding the surface with comets from the system's cometary belt and began diverting the comets in the early 2260s.
In 2264, an Andorian archeology team led by Rhenas Sherev located a protected vault under a mountain on Karabos II. With the comet strikes imminent, Commodore José Mendez diverted the Federation starship USS Enterprise to hasten excavation efforts and retrieve the scientists.
After genetic samples were found in the vault proving that the Karabosi and Aulacri were in fact the same species, Aulacri Director Skovir approved the Enterprise diverting the comets to delay terraforming. Captain James T. Kirk considered the mission his first significant assignment after assuming command of the starship. (TOS novel: The Captain's Oath)
