Karel was the brother of Kell, and, when Kell died, Karel asked his mother to perform the mauk-to'Vor ritual to end his life. Karel obtained a mevak dagger and adanji incense for the ritual but his mother refused to carry it out. (TOS - Errand of Fury novel: Seeds of Rage)
