Karen Farris was a female Human. She was born in the 2350s and attended Starfleet Academy in the 2370s. While at the Academy, Collins became a member of the elite Red Squad. She was the great-great-granddaughter of Nilz Baris. After her junior year at the Academy, Farris and Dorian Collins took a vacation on Risa.

In 2373, Farris and her fellow Red Squad cadets were assigned to the USS Valiant and began a training mission around the United Federation of Planets. The Valiant was near Cardassian space when the Dominion War began and Farris was given a commission as a commander by Tim Watters when the officers were killed by the Cardassians. She also became first officer and the tactical officer.

After Jake Sisko and Nog were rescued by the Valiant, Farris condemned Jake for upsetting Collins by talking about home. Farris later operated the weapons in the ship's assault against the Jem'Hadar battleship. After it failed, Farris was killed when the Jem'Hadar ship unleashed its full arsenal on the Valiant. (DS9 episode: "Valiant")

Some time later, Nilz Baris met with Collins to ask her how his great-great-granddaughter had died. Collins told him she died a hero, the last of the Valiant crew to fall. (DS9 short story: "Dorian's Diary")
