Kava was a plant native to Bajor which was farmed by the Bajorans. It is used in foods and beverages. (DS9 episodes: "Crossfire", "Resurrection")

The Ohalu Prophecies predicted a good kava harvest in 1423. (DS9 - Avatar novel: Book One)

A Bajoran folk story involved three brothers from Jo'kala finding a large kava root and arguing over its sale. (DS9 episode: "Starship Down", DS9 novel: Warpath)

In 2370, kava was brought to New Bajor when the colony was established and would endure after its destruction by the Dominion. It was still growing when Jake Sisko and the crew of the Even Odds visited the planet in 2376. (DS9 novel: Rising Son)
