Kessler was a 23rd century Human man, by the 2260s decade an officer in the Federation Starfleet's security division. In the year 2267, he held the rank of ensign and was assigned to the security department aboard the starship USS Enterprise as a security officer.

Biography

Ensign Kessler was one of a number of Enterprise personnel tasked with tracking the Nomad space probe when it came aboard Enterprise. In particular, Kessler was on one of two teams that were vaporized by Nomad in an Enterprise corridor. (TOS episode: "The Changeling")

Although all of the crewmen killed by Nomad — Kessler, Cordry, Real and Ward — were referred to as "ensigns" in DFT - Another Piece of the Action comic: "Part 2", in the canon episode all of the vaporized security men wore lieutenant's rank insignia stripes. Additionally, in the episode, one of the men was referred to as Lt. Carlisle. It is unclear if "Carlisle" was an alternate name for one of the vaporized men, or if the after-action report contained errors in listing the the ranks and possibly the names as including an additional man who may or may not have been killed, or possibly who was killed and not vaporized, as indicated as there was a "lifeless body" mentioned in TOS - Star Trek 7 novelization: The Changeling by James Blish.
