The Khlinae class was a 25 century Romulan starship type, a tier 6-rated Tal Shiar adapted battlecruiser warbird class infused with Borg technology, in Romulan Star Empire service in the 2410s decade. By way of the Lobi Crystal Consortium, this class was acquired by the Romulan Republic Navy and the Khitomer Alliance in the year 2410. (STO website: Agents of Yesterday: Tal Shiar Lockbox!)
History and specifics[]
The Khlinae class was a technological evolution of the 2400s-era tier 5-rated Khnial-class adapted battlecruiser. The IRW Khnial was originally Colonel Hakeev's D'deridex-class warbird, gradually transformed with dangerous Borg technology. Due the to the competition for the future of the Romulan people between Empress Sela of the Romulan Star Empire and the fledgling Romulan Republic, innovation bred the next iteration of the Khnial class. The Tal Shiar also deployed Borg-adapted destroyer classes based on the same design principle, the tier 5 Llaihr-class and the tier 6 Mandukar-class.
The Khitomer Alliance and its Romulan Republic member state acquired these classes through bidding with the Lobi Crystal Consortium. The Ferengi had salvaged ships of these classes in Romulan regions of space. Although their crews had been killed in combat, the Tal Shiar adapted starships had somehow rebuilt themselves. (STO website: Agents of Yesterday: Tal Shiar Lockbox!)
Typically for Romulan and Reman starships of its time period, a Khlinae-class vessel was equipped with plasma beam arrays and plasma torpedo launchers. Specifically, forward-facing weapons included a plasma beam array, plasma torpedo launcher and a pair of plasma dual beam banks. Aft-facing weapons included another plasma torpedo launcher and three plasma beam arrays. Like other Tal Shiar adapted starships of this era, its equipment included a shield array, deflector array, impulse engines and a Tal Shiar adapted Borg warp core. Unlike other Romulan warbirds of its time, the Tal Shiar adapted starships lacked the singularity warp core. Its special weapon, first installed on the IRW Khlinae, was the enhanced indoctrination nanite dispersal system. These nanites, adapted from Borg nanoprobes, could temporarily subvert a hostile starship's weapon systems. The IRW Khlinae carried an improved version of this system compared to the indoctrination nanite dispersal system of the original IRW Khnial. Vessels of this class were equipped with a cloaking device and capable of sensor analysis. (STO website: Agents of Yesterday: Tal Shiar Lockbox Stats!)
The Khlinae class was derived from the Khnial class, itself evolved from the D'deridex class. They shared the crew complement of 1500 people. (STO website: Legacy of Romulus: New Tal Shiar Lock Box and Lobi Ships)
Ships of this class deployed by the Khitomer Alliance were also fitted with a quantum slipstream drive and could reach transwarp velocities. The hull was modular and could be modified at shipyards interfaces operated by New Romulus Shipyards, Klingon Defense Force Order of Builders and Starfleet Shipyards Operations at Alliance facilities across the Milky Way Galaxy. The class operated with three hull material options, the default Adapted Romulan plus Augmented Romulan and Enhanced Romulan. The ship's overall appearance could be modified further by Alliance personnel with vanity shield arrays. Bridge officer stations allowed for a commander of any department, an engineering lieutenant commander, a lieutenant commander pulling double duty as command and science officer, a lieutenant doubling as intel officer and tactical officer, and an ensign of any department. This battlecruiser was equipped with a cruiser command array that could boost strategic maneuvering, shield frequency modulation and weapon system efficiency. When deployed as an Alliance battlecruiser, a battle-hardened ship benefitted from absorptive plating, enhanced weapon banks, enhanced hull plating and armored hull as well as the assimilated power conduits starship trait.
