It is a real-world technique that records electrical emissions from objects through photography.

Zantra's medical examination
In 2273, Doctor Christine Chapel used a Kirlian scan to diagnose Zantra, a long-lived Zaranite who suffered a seizure and collapsed, after which his left heart practically stopped beating. Zantra was placed on a biobed and underwent a body-scan. Chapel tried a variety of other techniques, including diasonics, but none helped her determine the cause of the heart failure.
