Kivo was a 23rd century Human man. While attending Starfleet Academy he attained the responsibility of being a duty officer.
During his first year at the Academy in 2251, James T. Kirk was jumped by Will Rogge, a fellow cadet who felt that Kirk only got into the Academy due to family connections. As the duty officer, Kivo investigated the incident. However, Kirk denied that any fight happened, protecting Rogge's Starfleet career. (TOS comic: "Captain James T. Kirk: Psycho-File")
