The Imperial Klingon Star Academy or Klingon Naval Academy was a 23rd century training school for Klingon Defense Force officer candidates, an institute of higher learning academy in the Klingon Empire. It was located on Qo'noS. (ST video game: Klingon Academy)

History and specifics[]

In the 23rd century, early in the 2290s decade, General Chang taught recruits at the Academy. Lessons focused on starship combat with neighboring powers, including a hypothetical war with the United Federation of Planets. (TOS video game: Klingon Academy)

In the 24th century, early in the 2370s, Academy training squadron First Cadre was on an archaeological expedition with First Cadre leader Murg.

In the year 2374, Kovold warned his counterpart Pava Ek'Noor sh'Aqabaa of the Viator artifact after a clash between First Cadre and their rival Starfleet Academy training group Omega Squad. (SA comic: "Between Love and Hate")

In the 25th century, similar assignments were available at Klingon Academy and Starfleet Academy. By 2409, the Klingon Defense Force officer training was open to non-Klingon member species of the Empire. The most common aliens in the Academy included Ferasans, Gorn, Letheans, Nausicaans and Orions. Some joined Trill and liberated Borg Klingons enrolled as well. Academy personnel reflected the diversity of its student body. (STO - Season 5: Crossfire mission: "The Lore of the Empire")

Following the recognition of the Romulan Republic and the burgeoning Khitomer Alliance with other friendly powers in 2409, Romulan and Reman officers visited Academy grounds for training with loresingers. Through the Khitomer Alliance, some Talaxians and Cardassians enrolled from 2410 onwards. (STO - Delta Rising mission: "The Lore of the Empire")

From 2409 onwards, several events were coordinated between Klingon and Starfleet Academy. This included quizzes about the history from 2380 to 2409. Both academies recorded the training content on the same datachips. At KA, Loresinger Ch'toh led this training. (STO missions: "The Lore of the Empire", "Learning the Lore of the Empire")

The Junior Officer Appreciation Weekend was an event held several times a year and involved an experienced officer teaming up with an academy cadet for particle analysis on the campus. Commander B'tama was in charge of the event. (STO mission: "Academy Event")

At one point, Academy visitors could consult a holographic version of Lieutenant Worf. (STO mission: "The Next Generation: 25th Anniversary")

Occasionally, q would celebrate his birthday with miniaturized versions of himself. He tasked Academy visitors with capturing these and collecting Omega particles. (STO missions: "Party Crashers", "Party Patrol", "Present Patrol")

Specifics[]

Rigid training programs imbued discipline and loyalty. It was also known for being a particularly brutal experience that hardened character.

Candidates enrolled when they reached 12 Earth years of age, and attendance lasted four to five years. The first two years focused on primary learning under the command of a thought master and training officers. Discipline was encouraged with an agonizer booth in their barracks. Failure rate was about 40% during the first year. Sciences and other academics become the focus of the second year, along with specialized weapons training. (FASA RPG module: The Klingons: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual)

The third year included combat training under live battle conditions, survival exercises and combat drills. It also included the Determinant Factor Exercise, a critical loyalty test. The fourth year was mainly for honing skills, with seniors taking charge of groups of incoming freshmen.

The final graduation exercise was a group function and an actual duty assignment. Commissions were earned following graduation, after which the new officers participated in a year-long cadet cruise. (FASA RPG module: Graduation Exercise)

During the cruise, cadet graduates held the rank of midshipman, and some were required to take more than one tour. Two years of further study in command school were offered for those aiming to become starship department heads or commanding officers. Graduates earned an increase of one grade in rank. (FASA RPG module: The Klingons)

History[]

In the late 23rd century, following many hours of torture in his barracks' agonizer booth, first year cadet Kyn tai-Tvor arranged to have his law instructor killed. His brother sought revenge, but failed to kill Kyn. In his second year, Kyn was convicted and executed for insubordination after training a cadre of his students in the art of assassination and plotting to take revenge for hazing practices. (TOS - FASA RPG short story: "Force of Law")

For the final examination of cadet exercise group 473 in 2288, senior cadets Kalla Rovashi, Kirlack 'Illioth, Kuron Treth, Mazrak Hurn, Medan Linzor, and Mijarn Kommora were given a classified assignment to recover a Klingon agent on Tarab VI in the Triangle sector. (FASA RPG module: Graduation Exercise)

By the end of the 23rd century, 12 K't'agga-class cruisers had been reassigned as training ships for the academy. (FASA RPG module: Klingon Ship Recognition Manual)

In 2290, General Chang oversaw cadet training simulations at an associated institution, the Elite Command Academy. (ST video game: Klingon Academy)
