Klingon border starbases are massive facilities with a complement that can reach the thousands. Fortress starbases are located near strategically important worlds or systems, or by rebellious worlds to deter insurrection. Klingon fortress starbases will often have facilities for ship maintenance, but their primary mission is to serve as fortified outposts therefore weapons are their primary systems. Armored and heavily shielded, these fortresses can withstand an assault by a fleet of battlecruisers and are equipped with enough photon torpedo tubes and disruptor emplacements to deter most attackers.
The larger facilities contain large agricultural areas for raising food animals and provide the base ingredients needed to ferment bloodwin. In the larger starbases, officers command departments with hundreds. Each of the border starbases function as the sector command hub or as the staging area for battle groups or transport convoys.
