Koch's postulates was a group of four scientific criteria which were designed to establish a causal relationship between a microbe and a disease.

While studying an artificial disease that had infected a landing party on Miri's homeworld in the year 2266, Doctor Leonard McCoy determined that it didn't satisfy any of Koch's postulates. (TOS - Star Trek 1 novelization: Miri)
