The Kolm-An-class was a Federation class VIII assault ship starship in Starfleet service in the 23rd century, becoming active on reference stardate 2/2003. The class was named for the planet Kolm-an, site of heavy fighting during the Four Years War. Upgrades and construction modifications were planned to bring later Kolm-An vessels to the outfit of a class XV starship.
Specifications[]
The Kolm-An was created in the late 23rd century as an assault ship design. Kolm-An-class vessels crewed 30 officers and men, with room for up to 350 troops. Additionally, the Kolm-An could carry 17,500 metric tons of cargo, rated at 350 SCU (standard cargo units), and weighed 117,838 metric tons. The Kolm-An measured 212 meters in length, 93 meters in width and 54 meters in height. The Kolm-An had four standard (6-person) personnel transporters, four 20-person combat transporter stages, two 22-person emergency transporter stages, two large-scale cargo transporters and four smaller-scale cargo transporter stages. The control computer of the Kolm-An vessels was of the M-3 type.
The Kolm-An warp engines were FWE-2 type, rated to cruise at warp factor 7 and max out at warp factor 9. The Kolm-An impulse engines were of the FIF-1 type. The Kolm-An weapons consisted of three dual-emitter FH-12 phaser banks, a total of six phaser emitters, with forward, port and starboard firing arcs. The vessels had four FP-7 photon torpedo launchers, all with forward firing arcs. Kolm-An was defended by FSI model deflector shields.
History[]
The Kolm-An-class history began with the need for a formidable assault vessel with more forward weaponry than the Makin and Continent-classes. Other assault ships carry more men and equipment, but the Kolm-An balances this with greater shipboard weaponry, the better to provide landed troops with orbital fire support.
The Kolm-An was designed to transport a company of Fleet Marines with their vehicles and equipment, and land them on a planet via transporters and/or shuttlecraft; to provide all their support needs for up to 30 standard solar days without re-supply, and to hold off minor counterattacks, all of this without aid or support from accompanying Star Fleet vessels.
Of the initial 39 Kolm-An vessels built, 34 survived the first few years of active service. Two are used by Star vessel, at that point, had been transferred to Starfleet Training Command, two had been scrapped, and 1 had been destroyed. In the later 23rd century, the Kolm-An-class was slated to continue production at the rate of 16 per year at the Salazaar, Venus and Starbase 12 shipyards. Background[]
Presumably, a USS Kolm-Am was the prototype of this class, but such a ship was not explicitly mentioned in the source.
This ship type only appeared in the Stardate Magazine article bearing the same name.
