For other uses, see Kolm-an.

Kolm-an, formerly known as Kolmana, was the third planet in the Karregheni star system in the Klingon Empire in the Alpha or the Beta Quadrant. It was the only class M planet in its system, and it had three moons. It was the site of an Orion Colony and a major Klingon base.

Though it was commonly thought to be an ancient Klingon base, Kolmana, as it was known, was originally a base for Orion pirates, until Klingon forces drove them away. Thereafter, it was left as a peaceful world with a most agrarian Orion population under the Thentak family and a small ruling Klingon garrison. Under the Klingons, it became known as "Kolm-an".

In reference stardate 1/87 (circa 2244), the Klingon emperor ordered the construction of a major base at Kolm-an, though he later decided to reallocate funds and resources to the invasion force prepared to invade the Federation. Instead, by chance, Kolm-an was chosen to coordinate communications and act as a forward marshaling area, becoming the great control center and command post for the Klingon invasion force in the Four Years War. The Klingon Empire owned much of its early success to this decision to use Kolm-an as an administrative installation rather than a military one. However, as a result, Kolm-an was not as fortified or defended as other bases had been. (FASA RPG module: The Orions: Book of Common Knowledge)

The Orions: Book of Common Knowledge depicts the Kolm-an base as an administrative base, as above, while The Klingons mentions its importance to supply and repair, as below. It is possible that the base's role expanded or changed during the war.

When Admiral Komex informed the Federation of Kolm-an's location and its importance as a supply and repair base, it became the site of the Battle of Kolm-an on stardate 1/9803.20 (late 2250s), the last great clash of the war. The lightly fortified Kolm-an base was overrun and ruined by Starfleet forces, and its loss shattered Klingon supply and repair capabilities. The Klingons could do nothing to organize a defense against Federation forces, so the Empire was forced to sue for peace. (FASA RPG modules: The Orions: Book of Common Knowledge, The Klingons: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual, The Klingons: Game Operation Manual)

According to Federation studies of intercepted subspace radio communications and scout probes in the area, the Klingons did not attempt to reconstruct the Kolm-an base into the late 23rd century, but maintained a small garrison that occupied the ruins.

Kolm-an had a technological/sociopolitical index of 999794-75 and a planetary trade profile of BADDBCE/B (C).

It had a warm temperate climate, a class M terrestrial atmosphere and a 26-hour-long day. It had a total surface area of 317,940,470 square kilometers and, with 24% land mass, a total land area of 76,305,712 square kilometers. About 17% of its makeup was normal metals, 7% was gemstones, and it had only trace amounts of radioactive elements, industrial crystals and other special minerals.
