Korvat was a planet, the location of a Klingon colony. (DS9 episode: "Blood Oath", TLE novel: Excelsior: Forged in Fire)
Korvat was located in the Pi Canis Majoris star system in the Beta Quadrant, in the Hromi sector of the Pi Canis sector block. (ST reference: Star Charts; STO mission: "The Ultimate Klingon")
History
Korvat was the site of negotiations between the Federation and the Klingon Empire in 2289 whose aim was an end to the decades-old cold war between the two. The Federation was represented in the negotiations by Curzon Dax, while the Klingons were represented by Kang, along with Koloth.
Though ultimately unsuccessful, the negotiations did provide a sort of detente that created the conditions that allowed for more serious negotiations several years later when the Klingon moon of Praxis exploded, threatening the survival of their homeworld.
The meeting also sparked a long friendship and mutual admiration between Curzon Dax and the Klingon negotiators that was later renewed by Jadzia Dax. (DS9 episode: "Blood Oath", ST novel: Excelsior: Forged in Fire)
Destiny timeline
During the Borg attack on the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, Korvat was a target of the Borg Collective. While at Ramatis III, USS Enterprise-E security chief Jasminder Choudhury suggested that Korvat was the next target; although first officer Worf disagreed based on what information they had, Captain Picard set course for Korvat, as it would be the only planet the ship could reach in time to make a difference. Korvat ended up being one of five simultaneous targets by Borg cubes, and the Enterprise arrived too late to save the USS Alexey Leonov and USS Gibraltar along with ten million planetary inhabitants, although roughly twenty nine thousand survivors remained scattered in highland and isolated areas. (ST - Destiny novel: Gods of Night)
Online timeline
On Stardate 81753.16 in 2404, Chancellor J'mpok of the Klingon Empire invoked ancient Klingon territorial claims to the Hromi Cluster and surrounding sectors and demanded that all non-Klingons vacate the area within three months. President Aennik Okeg refused the ultimatum point-blank on Stardate 82001.36 in 2405.
Three days later the Klingons attacked Korvat with the intent of forcibly evicting any Federation citizens, sparking the Federation-Klingon War of 2405-2410. On an episode of Illuminating the City of Light Starfleet Admiral T'nae commented that she believed Korvat had been chosen for its symbolic value rather than any strategic importance, noting that the Klingons might have hit Khitomer instead had the Federation still been welcome there.
Starfleet retaliated, sending a fleet to protect their citizens from the attempt at ethnic cleansing. The USS Montgomery Scott was damaged during the fighting but was towed to a starbase for repairs. (ST website : The Path to 2409)
