Kurchatovium (abbreviated Ku) is a chemical element, a transuranic metal that is number 104 on the periodic table. Kurchatovium was discovered on Earth in 1964, in Russia. Because conclusions regarding this elements properties were advanced years later in the United States, an alternate name "Rutherfordium" (Rf) was adopted. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)

In actuality, this element's initial discovery was in 1966, although the Russian claim on the name was later rescinded and the "kurchtovium" name replaced.
