The Lactrans were a civilization native to the planet Lactra VII.

History and specifics[]

The Lactrans resembled large, meters-long slugs, but were regarded as being highly intelligent, as well as possessing telepathic abilities which were beyond Vulcan abilities.

Lactrans were able to focus and amplify electronic impulses in the brain. Lactrans reproduced sexually despite an apparent lack of sexual organs. (TAS - Log Eight novelization: The Eye of the Beholder)

The Lactran telepathic language was complex and mathematics-based. They employed telekinesis for construction and other labor. Their average IQ was more than 9,000. They had the ability to telepathically alter sensor readings of passing starships to indicate a lack of life on their planet. (ST reference: The Worlds of the Federation)

An average Lactran was about 6 meters long. (Heritage Models RPG module: Adventure Gaming in the Final Frontier)

History[]

Many hundreds of years ago, Lactrans traveled in starships and collected specimens for their zoo from distant star systems. Within the past few centuries, however, their society developed toward a more aesthetic sense and they only collected from nearby systems. By the late 23rd century they claim to have forgotten how to build deep-space vessels. (TAS - Log Eight novelization: The Eye of the Beholder)

In 2270, the USS Enterprise visited the planet on a mission to investigate the disappearance of the SS Ariel. Captain James T. Kirk and his crew soon discovered that the Lactrans had placed the Ariel crew into a type of zoo which housed different types of animals. (TAS episode: "The Eye of the Beholder")

As a condition of their release, Kirk agreed to capture a specimen for the Lactra VII zoo. Three Lactrans resided in cargo hold 14-B aboard the Enterprise during a voyage of two or three months to help retrieve a cosmozoan jawanda. (TAS - Log Eight novelization: The Eye of the Beholder)

In 2272, Lactrans were among the inhabitants of Stuyvesant Preserve, a 23rd century housing project for immigrants in New York City on Earth. Other residents included Andorians, Skorr, Rigellians, Argelians and the Klingon teacher G'dath. (TOS novel: A Flag Full of Stars)

While compiling a report of the planet Orisha and its native inhabitants in 2380, Commander Deanna Troi identified the dominant inhabitants as being a insectoid species similar to the Lactrans, the Xindi, and the Nasat. (TTN novel: Sword of Damocles)
