Land marriage was an old Xenexian tradition, whereby a widow who wished to protect her estate, honor, or children from bride raids by rival clans, would marry her own land. In 2354, in order to protect Calhoun widow Catrine and prevent a power play by G'nard of G'lyndr, D'ndai of Calhoun performed a land marriage which made Catrine "a Lady of Xenex," wed to the entire planet. (NF short story: "A Lady of Xenex")
