Langston Hughes was a 20th century African-American author.

When Benny Russell, was told that that the world wasn't ready for a Negro to be known as a writer, in Russell's case, a story about Benjamin Sisko for Incredible Tales, Russell mentioned examples of such writers as Hughes, Richard Wright and Zora Neale Hurston.
