Laris was a Romulan who worked in the vineyards of Yuyat Beta and later Château Picard.
Biography[]
Her name means “new day” in the Romulan language. (PIC episode: "The Star Gazer")
Like other Romulans, Laris likely had multiple names: one, a secret name used only by lovers; one, a name used in her family; and one, a common name by which she was known every day. (PIC episode: "The Impossible Box")
Laris was promised to Zhaban when they were babies, according to the custom of their people. (PIC episode: "The Star Gazer")
Laris, along with Zhaban, were agents of the Tal Shiar. Her handlers were Zhaban’s parents. (PIC episode: "Maps and Legends")
In the 2380s, Laris and Zhaban were sent to observe the fragile peace between the Romulans and the Yuyatis on Yuyat Beta, unbeknownst to Governor Shiana. During their mission, Laris fell in love with Zhaban. They were aware that if their Tal Shiar superiors discovered this, they would be excommunicated. (PIC comics: "Countdown", "Issue 1", "Issue 2", "Issue 3"; PIC episode: "Remembrance")
She and Zhaban later went to work as caretakers for Jean-Luc Picard at Château Picard, his vineyard in France. In 2399, Laris used the expertise she had obtained in the Tal Shiar to conduct a molecular reconstruction of the attack on Dahj’s apartment in Boston to help Picard. (PIC episode: "Maps and Legends")
That same year, they protected the château and Picard when both came under attack from Romulan Zhat Vash seeking information about the whereabouts of the Synth Soji. (PIC episode: "The End is the Beginning")
Laris was widowed when Zhaban died sometime between 2399 and 2401. She continued to work for Picard, who had returned to Château Picard after he died and his consciousness was transferred to a Synth body. She expressed romantic interest in Picard and told him she could best honor her love for Zhaban by loving again, even more deeply. Picard returned her interest but something held him back from acting upon it. Laris then left after telling him it would be too awkward for her to continue as his housekeeper after she had expressed her feelings for him. (PIC episode: "The Star Gazer")
