A laser cannon in action on Talos IV.
Laser cannon was an application of laser technology, a type of energy weapon used by Starfleet in the 22nd century and 23rd century.
History[]
The predecessor to phaser weaponry, the laser weapons used by the Federation Starfleet until the 2260s decade used a microwave laser beam that was fired through a nadion particle emitter. [citation needed]
By the year 2159, the United Earth Starfleet developed laser cannons and other laser weapons as a replacement of phase modulated weaponry. Laser weaponry would be used for over 100 years before being replaced by phasers. [citation needed]
However by 2233 Starfleet developped an advanced version of the Phase Cannon, which would be used in place of lasers until the late 2240s when Starfleet created a better version of the antiqued Laser Weapon.
The starship USS Enterprise carried at least one portable laser cannon which could be deployed on planets, using a microwave beam from the Enterprise to power it.
In 2254, the Enterprise's laser cannon was deployed on Talos IV when the crew attempted to rescue Captain Pike from Talosian captivity, while the Talosians generated an illusion that the cannon had done little damage, it had in fact sheared the top off of the targeted rock structure. However in 2257 Starfleet developed an early version of the phaser that would be used alongside laser weaponry until 2265.

Starfleet still used laser weaponry on its old starships well after 2265, however by 2273 Starfleet refitted every vessel with Phasers as part of the Extreme Upgrade of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701).
