A mounted laser drill.

A mounted laser drill.

A laser drill was a handheld or mounted mining tool which utilized a laser to cut through rocks and other minerals.

History and specifics[]

A large, mounted laser drill was built on a Proxtrite military outpost on Scythe in the Alpha Proxima system in the 13th century. Interfaced with a computer, it could cut very precise tools from templates. In 2269, a landing party used the drill to fashion a key card out of local samples of tri-phosphate silver ore. (TOS video game: 25th Anniversary mission: That Old Devil Moon)

Laser drills were used by the forced laborers in the dilithium mines on Pao'la. The prisoners on that world were able to reconfigure their drills into weapons to use against their Klingon captors. (TOS novel: In the Name of Honor)

A laser drill was used to murder three Bolian women on Berengaria VII in 2364. (SCE eBook: Security)
