Doctor Lawrence "Larry" Marvick (sometimes known as Laurence Marvick) was a male human engineer who lived in the 23rd century.

History[]

Marvick was a brilliant engineer at the Cochrane Institute on Proxima. In his time there, he worked on a theoretical engine design that could exceed warp 7. (ST reference: Federation: The First 150 Years)

In the 2230s, Marvick was one of several engineers who were working on designs for the warp engines of the new Constitution-class of starships alongside Starfleet Logistics officer Robert April and computer genius Richard Daystrom. Unknown to many, Marvick was helped in his research by Charles Tucker III, who had been living a secret life since 2155. Due to their close working relationship, the two engineers also became friends and Marvick accompanied Tucker to the Starfleet War Memorial, San Francisco, in 2238. (ST reference: Federation: The First 150 Years; ENT novel: Last Full Measure)

In 2243, Marvick made an improvement in warp engines. (Last Unicorn RPG module: All Our Yesterdays: The Time Travel Sourcebook)

The exact nature of the improvement was not mentioned in the All Our Yesterdays RPG book.

Following the launch of the USS Enterprise in 2245, Marvick signed aboard the ship as chief engineer. Like most chief engineers he regarded the Enterprise as his and clashed several times with Captain Robert April regarding the treatment of the starship. (TOS - Enterprise Logs short story: "Though Hell Should Bar the Way"). Marvick was still on Enterprise in 2249 (TOS novel Best Destiny).

In "Though Hell Should Bar the Way", Marvick's first name was spelled "Laurence".

By the 2260s, Marvick was working with Dr. Miranda Jones in adapting starship navigational instruments so that Medusans could operate them. In 2268, Marvick, Jones, and Medusan Ambassador Kollos, boarded the USS Enterprise. Marvick had fallen in love with Jones and attempted to persuade her to leave Kollos' side to be with him. When she rebuffed him, Marvick attempted to kill Kollos, but he was driven insane after seeing the Medusan. In his madness he took the Enterprise beyond the galactic barrier and soon died of insanity. (TOS episode: "Is There in Truth No Beauty?")

Alternate universes[]

In one alternate timeline, Marvick headed the development team at the newly established Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in 2264, where he was responsible for the Excelsior Class Project. (Star Trek: Myriad Universes novel: A Less Perfect Union)
