The legendary starship was a high-profile starship type developed by Starfleet in the early 2410s decade. This type of starship was inspired by "hero ships" from pivotal moments before and during Federation history. They were conceived of at the end of 2410. History and specifications[]

Following a series of wars and crises that saw action for both brand-new starship classes, and refitted "classics" benefiting from a fleet modernization program, Starfleet provided upgrades to ten existing ship types to bring them up to level with the latest designs. Initially, the Galaxy-class family of exploration cruisers was upgraded to tier 6 legendary command exploration cruisers, receiving new abilities - including command starship rating - and stats. (STO website: Legacy: The Legendary Command Exploration Cruiser)

The next line was included the Defiant-class and related tactical escorts. These were upgraded to legendary pilot warships, and enhanced version of pilot escorts. (STO website: Legacy: Legendary Pilot Warship)

Starfleet's initiative proved prophetic. During an Excalbian simulacrum crisis at Excalbia on stardate 84999.22 in January 2411, Captain Va'Kel Shon of the USS Enterprise-F let a fleet of Enterprises and other "hero ships" from previous centuries into the Battle of Excalbia to assist a Khitomer Alliance vessel in defending the planet from a Borg Queen Seven of Nine and her fleet. The ships of Shon's fleet, in order of arrival, were:

USS Voyager (Intrepid-class)
USS Discovery (Crossfield-class)

Other ship classes receiving similar upgrades included the Constitution-class cruiser, the Intrepid-class long range science vessel, and the Columbia-class light escort. The USS Columbia, USS Voyager, Jefferies-class were on display in interfaces at the shipyard at Earth Spacedock. (STO - Legacy mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Soon after, the Navy of the Romulan Republic launched the first non-Federation legendary starship category, the legendary light intel warbird. This type of warbird was based on the venerable Vas Hatham-class bird of prey and related classes. (STO website: Legacy: Legendary Light Intel Warbird)

During the Klingon Civil War of 2411, Starfleet upgraded the existing dreadnought cruiser classes to the new legendary dreadnought cruiser configuration, based on the Galaxy- and Galaxy X-class vessels. (STO website: House Shattereds: The Legendary Mirror Bundle, Legendary Dreadnought Cruiser)

Following the Shattering of the Klingon Empire, Khitomer Alliance projects were officially cancelled or went on hold. Starfleet engineers refocused on the Yard 39 project, and refitted the Walker-class line of ships to legendary starship specifications. However, the Temer-class raider, although not a legendary starship, was added to the Allied Fleet Service soon after. (STO website: House Shattered: 11th Anniversary Event!)

The next legendary starships formed a batch of four and included the first traditionally Klingon legendary vessels. These were the B'rel-class legendary bird of prey and the Vor'cha-class legendary command support battlecruiser. The two Starfleet legends were the Excelsior-class legendary miracle worker heavy cruiser, and the Ambassador-class legendary temporal support cruiser.
