Leonard Cantrell was a character in Dixon Hill stories, a 20th century Human man. He starred in the 2360s holonovel The Rich and the Dead.
Fictional biography[]
In the 1940s, Cantrell was a vintner in the San Francisco area and co-owned a winery with Daniel Truscott. He was sympathetic to Germany during World War II. He was a wine aficionado, and among his personal stock were several cases of a German riesling from Kronhaus Weinkellerei. He could not openly possess it, as that might expose his political sympathies. During the war, he began embezzling money from the company for the German military. By 1942, he realized his business partner had leaned his secret.
Cantrell also fell in love with Truscott's half-sister Antonia, who had amassed a large gambling debt with the mob. Together they schemed to get rid of Daniel, protecting his secret and acquiring money to pay her debt. Cantrell supplied dynamite to be used for bombing Daniel's yacht. After the deaths, Antonia went to the police, and then hired private investigater Dixon Hill, blaming the murders on her half brother Eldon.
Later, during a struggle with Dixon Hill at his mansion, Antonia was accidentally struck by a bullet from Cantrell's gun. She died in his arms as he wept, claiming he did it all for her. (TNG comic: "Hidden Agendas!")
History[]
In 2369, Robert Picard gave his brother Jean-Luc the holonovel as a birthday gift, perhaps intrigued by its plot twist in which Cantrell could be revealed as the murderer if one had superior wine-tasting skills. (TNG comic: "The Rich and the Dead!")
Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher interacted with a hologram of Cantrell on the holodeck of the USS Enterprise-D. When Cantrell dared share a bottle of the riesling, Picard recognized it as a superb vintage and became suspicious. (TNG comic: "Reductions & Deductions")
While snooping that night, Picard and Crusher uncovered cases of Cantrell's private wine collection, confirming its origins as German and revealing his motive for the murders. They also found a box of dynamite. (TNG comic: "Hidden Agendas!")
