Lewis Zimmerman was a Human scientist who created the Emergency Medical Hologram at Jupiter Station in early 2371. His image was used for the EMH Mark 1 as "it was my program after all... it only seemed logical to use myself as a model".
While developing the EMH, Zimmerman got into a heated discussion with Admiral Leonard McCoy over the project. (TOS short story: "Doctors Three")
Later that year, Zimmerman attended a ceremony conducted by the Horta on Janus VI. (TOS short story: "Tears for Eternity")
In 2373, he began work on the Long-term Medical Holographic program (LMH). He chose Julian Bashir as the template and travelled to Deep Space 9 to gather information on him. Zimmerman interviewed many inhabitants of the space station to gather a complete picture of Bashir's personality. (DS9 episode: "Doctor Bashir, I Presume")
In 2375, Zimmerman returned to Deep Space 9 to study Vic Fontaine. (DS9 short story: "So a Horse Walks into a Bar...")
By 2376, Zimmerman was terminally ill and only expected to live a few more months. In desperation, Reginald Barclay sent a message to USS Voyager to see if the Doctor would be able to cure Zimmerman. Upon learning of Zimmerman's illness, the Doctor had himself transmitted back to the Alpha Quadrant, where he finally met the man who had created him and other Mark Is. After some difficulty, the Doctor was able to treat Zimmerman, who was happy to see that one of the holograms he created was still doing what he had designed it to do. (VOY episode: "Life Line")
By the early 2380s, Zimmerman and Reginald Barclay developed the Emergency Security Hologram with The Doctor. The ESH was developed based on the success of the Emergency Medical Hologram programs. The first ship to use the ESH was the USS Galen, who also pioneered a number of other advanced holographic staff, including upgraded EMH staff and holographic engineers. (VOY novel: Unworthy)
In the War of the Prophets alternate timeline, Zimmerman had died prior to 2400. (DS9 - Millennium novels: The War of the Prophets, Inferno)
