For the mirror universe counterpart, see Li Nalas (mirror).

Li Nalas was a male Bajoran, the son of Space Guard officer Li Tarka. Li Nalas lived in the 24th century and was a member of the Resistance during the Occupation of Bajor. He once worked as a laborer on Terok Nor.

Biography[]

Li became known as the Resistance's greatest fighter after he killed Gul Zarale, who had ordered the deaths of many Bajoran villagers. In actuality, Li had stumbled on the Cardassian by accident while the latter was bathing, and killed him. The stories about him said he had killed Zarale in glorious hand-to-hand combat. In 2360, Li was captured and taken to the Hutet labor camp on Cardassia IV. (DS9 episode: "The Homecoming", ST - Terok Nor novel: Dawn of the Eagles)

A decade later, Li's fellow prisoners smuggled his earring out of the camp without his knowledge. It eventually reached Quark on Deep Space 9, who gave it to Kira Nerys. Major Kira later pursuaded Benjamin Sisko to allow her to rescue Li, which she and Miles O'Brien were successful in doing. Li's return greatly pleased the Bajorans; Minister Jaro Essa appointed Li as Sisko's first officer and liaison officer to the Provisional Government. Li was given the rank of Navarch, which outranked all other titles and was specifically created for him, since no existing title was considered worthy of his name. (DS9 episode: "The Homecoming")

Li later helped the DS9 crew to investigate where the Alliance for Global Unity was obtaining its weapons and participated in the rescue of Kira. (DS9 episode: "The Circle")

After Admiral Chekote ordered the evacuation of DS9, Li pursuaded several Bajorans to remain behind and let the non-Bajorans board the runabouts. Li remained on the station to hinder the Militia and Circle takeover long enough for Kira and Jadzia Dax to bring evidence that the Cardassians were supplying the Circle weapons through a third party and would invade once the Federation left. After the plan was revealed, Krim Aldos returned control of the station to Starfleet. Day Kannu tried to assassinate Sisko, but Li threw himself into the path of the weapon fire. His last words before dying were "Off the hook... after all...". (DS9 episode: "The Siege")

The Militia had named their ship-of-state the Li Nalas in his honor by 2376. (DS9 novels: Abyss, Cathedral, Lesser Evil)

Li's return was one of the topics Jake Sisko discussed with Opaka Sulan when he met the former Kai in the Gamma Quadrant. (DS9 novel: Rising Son)

Lenaris Holem met Li Nalas when Li was alive. (DS9 novel: Cathedral)
