"Lies and Legends!" was the second issue in the four-part TNG miniseries The Modala Imperative. Released by DC Comics in August 1991, it was collected in an omnibus in October 1992. This story was written by Peter David and drawn by Pablo Marcos.

Summary[]

Admiral Leonard McCoy and Ambassador Spock reunite in the USS Enterprise-D's Ten Forward lounge, trading quips as if they've never been separated. McCoy, Spock, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard give a group of kids a tour of the conference lounge. Privately in Picard's ready room, McCoy and Spock reminisce about the old days.

Later, Spock and Lieutenant Commander Data host a concert, with Spock playing a Vulcan lute and Data a violin. Data picks up the Vulcan instrument afterwards, and as he memorized Spock's technique, Data was able to play the complex harp flawlessly. McCoy challenged them to play three-dimensional chess, and they did with the board in their heads as they walked along a corridor. Spock won after realizing he would have to concoct a strong enough deviation from standard chess strategy to beat Data.

Captain's log, supplemental
We are in standard orbit around Modala, and an away team consisting of myself, Counselor Troi, and our guests will be beaming down to participate in the festivities.

Meanwhile, the freighter Spock had traveled aboard, Tornado, is disabled after an unprovoked attack by an unidentified vessel. Commander William T. Riker signals Picard that they've received the freighter's distress signal and that the Enterprise will be departing to provide assistance.

As the away team watches a reenactment of the Modalan revolution, the play is disturbed by a group of armed Ferengi. Daimon Tran announces that in the 23rd century the Krisaian regime traded weapons for ownership of Modala, and now the bill has come due.

To be continued...

Additional log entries[]

Personal log, Dr. Leonard McCoy, stardate 44396.0.
I haven't known him for five minutes before he started telling me how damned superior Vulcans were to humans. Naturally I took that as a challenge. Seemed I spent the rest of my life trying to provoke him. See how many reactions I could get out of him to remind him of how close his despised humanity lay to the surface. I would've been satisfied just to see him smile. I never dreamed all the ways that I would see him over the years... murderous... ecstatic... dying ... reborn. And it's funny. In all those different ways, at all those times, I never realized that what was most important to me... was just seeing him at all.
Tornado's captain's log, stardate 44396.2.
We have successfully rendezvoused with the Enterprise, dropping off Ambassador Spock so that he can accompany the starship to the centennial celebration on Modala. In the meantime, we are no en route to the Qapmoc star system, to deliver our cargo of foodstuffs to...
Captain's log, supplemental
A rather impromptu concert has been arranged upon the discovery by Mr. Spock and Mr. Data of their mutual interest... in stringed instruments.
