Linda Chang was a Human woman. She served in Starfleet as a botanist aboard the USS Enterprise in the 2270s.
History[]
Chang earned a degree in botany from the University of South Wales on Earth, which had an excellent xenobiology laboratory.
She joined Starfleet as a midshipman, and boarded the Enterprise during a stopover at Axanar in 2277. Hikaru Sulu considered her to be attractive and appealing.
In 2277, she became infected with a phytoplankton bacteria from Marris V, which was passed through physical contact and co-opted the crew with a single-minded obsession to spread the infection. After most of the ship's personnel became infected, she was among the first six people to be cured by James T. Kirk and Spock, along with Sulu, security chief Galloway, security officer Glaser, Ryan Leslie, Leonard McCoy and Montgomery Scott. (TOS - Star Trek II Short Stories short story: "Wild Card")
Chang beamed down in an environmental suit with a survey party to Omicron Theta V. Kirk asked her to coordinate the group's tricorder readings. (TOS - Star Trek II Short Stories short story: "The Secret Empire")
Later in 2277, Chang was given a rotation in engineering. While traveling through an ion storm, Chang provided an update to the bridge crew after Scott was forced to shut down the impulse engines. The highly energetic storm began to disrupt the fabric of reality, and on her display screen, Chang saw the ship's warp nacelles writhe. (TOS - Star Trek II Short Stories short story: "To Wherever")
