Ling was a Human, who served in the Federation Starfleet in its early years in the 22nd century.
History[]
By 2165, Ling held the rank of ensign and served as helmsman of the USS Essex under the command of Captain Bryce Shumar.
With the threat of an impending Klingon invasion, Essex was reasigned to the Federation border closest to Klingon space. Ling was killed in action, when the Essex engaged the IKS Gantin that tried to disable a Starfleet listening post. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Live by the Code)
