Lower decks locations

Location of lower decks marked on different starships.

"Lower decks" was a nickname by Federation Starfleet officers for an area aboard a starship. The term was used for decks positioned away from the bridge, engineering and other important sections. Personnel living and working in the area were lower deckers. (LD episode: "Second Contact")

History[]

The lower decks were a designated area aboard the California-class starship USS Cerritos in the 2380s decade. In the year 2380, another junior officer coldly welcomed the newly assigned Ensign D'Vana Tendi by saying, "keep it movin', lower decks." Ensigns Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler Sam Rutherford explained the term to Tendi and used "lower decks" to describe their group proudly, on one occasion chanting "Lower decks! Lower decks!" in the ship's bar. (LD episode: "Second Contact")

By 2381, lower decks also referred to the respective sections of vessels from different organizations. A conspiracy between Klingons and Pakled to co-opt a Varuvian bomb was influenced by the lower deckers of various ships, including the Cerritos, the Klingon B'rel-class bird of prey IKS Che'Ta', the Pakled clumpship Pakled and the Vulcan Sh'vhal. At the same time, the "lower decks" of Borg Cube 90182 remained uninvolved, due to the Collective's hive mind. (LD episode: "wej Duj")
