Lyra Niobe 1 was developed as a means of studying the star Lyra Niobe as it shifted into the beginning stages of becoming a nova. In 2267, the station was designed by Rantura Shipping Lines for the Vulcan Science Academy and built by Chiokis Starship Construction Corporation.
A Samson-class warp tender towed the facility into Lyra Niobe's orbit, and it entered service in 2267, on reference stardate 2/0902. Notably, it was the first R1 Investigator-class station to become operational.
