"Magic Painting (1)" is the first of three unusual TOS coloring books featuring original stories that were published by Talbotworth in 1979. Rather than color the black & white illustrations with crayons or colored pencils, the pages have been chemically treated so that colors appear when clear water is brushed over them. In this story, the USS Enterprise re-encountered the villainous Doctor Rycho.

Summary[]

James T. Kirk and Spock watched the viewscreen as the USS Enterprise traveled through space toward a class M planet with an orange star. They donned backpacks in the transporter room as a lieutenant beamed them to the surface. They materialized in front of a muscled creature with a humpback who roared at them and raised its fist. Kirk fired his phaser at it, but it was impervious to the blast and knocked them both unconscious.

Kirk and Spock awoke on the floor of a columned hall in front of a seated Doctor Rycho, who was guarded by two strange beasts with ape-like arms. Kirk spoke to Rycho, then the doctor directed Kirk to a room off to the left. Inside was a large alcove full of computers. Spock manipulated the controls, then Kirk opened his communicator and signaled the ship. They dematerialized in front of the surprised beasts and reappeared in the transporter room.

Back on the bridge, Kirk and Spock witnessed a huge blast on the viewscreen, and the Enterprise retreated from the exploding planet.

Background[]

  • Pages were printed without captions, allowing for easy foreign distribution, but it meant that the story did not provide names for the planet or its various creatures.
  • For purposes of this wiki, the villain is assumed to be Rycho because an identical character by that name appeared in TOS comic: "Rescue at Raylo".
  • This book and Magic Painting (2) were both published with the title "Magic Painting".
  • Because he'd previously appeared as a villain, one interpretation of the story was that Rycho threatened Kirk, and Spock subsequently caused Rycho's computers to auto destruct and blow up the planet. It could also be interpreted that Rycho was living on a doomed planet and intended to die when it self-destructed, but mercifully invited Kirk and Spock use his computers to warn the Enterprise and escape.
  • A character that might be Montgomery Scott appeared in the bridge and transporter room, but he was only seen from the back and wore lieutenant stripes.
  • The helmsman was seen only from the back.
